April 13, 2014 / Site-Specific Project, LungoTevere Fitness Gym, curated by the students of “Curating Museums and Galleries” course, John Cabot University, Rome Italy Tutor: Ilaria Gianni
Reflecting on the identity and the ontological foundation of the gym, I decided to highlight a specific side of it. I wanted to create an illustrated handbook about impossible exercises, offering a written and visual support to learn what is not possible to perform by the body, instead of the opposite. To this regard I interviewed 11 people among instructors and practitioners at the gym, I asked them about their own sense of limit, both in their physical and psychological way. I then structured their answers in chapters, together with images of their postures.
Although the project was intended to be displayed just in prints, I converted the work in a PDF file in order to be projected on a wall and experienced by a larger group of people all at once. During the exhibition I read with emphasis the written part, adding a performative aspect to the piece.
